14-year-old R.J. Barker was born with spina bifida and uses a manual wheelchair. He is waiting for a service dog to perform such tasks as turning lights on and off, alerting someone if he needs help, retrieving dropped items, aiding with balance, and of course, providing the wonderful companionship of a four-legged friend. R.J. is a charming young man who lives with his mother and sister in Freeland on Whidbey Island. He is energetic and enthusiastic and will benefit greatly from the independence a service dog will provide as he pursues his life goals.
This photo of R.J. was taken last year at "Challenge Air", which was sponsored by Boeing. R.J. attended with his grandfather (far right) and had the thrill of flying the plane for a few minutes.
