Garrett is a high school student in Ferndale who applied for a service dog in 2005 and was paired with Bergy in 2008. Garrett was born with a muscular disease that causes limited mobility and coordination, as well as muscular weakness. With Bergy’s help, Garrett is more self-sufficient at school and at home, plus he has the loving companionship of his special friend. Bergy picks up dropped items, opens doors, tugs off clothing and turns lights on and off so Garrett doesn’t need to depend on friends and family for those simple tasks. Most of all, Garrett’s canine companion takes the attention off his disability and allows people to focus on the cool kid he really is.
